The Milwaukee Brewers are listing Ryan Braun as day-to-day with a strained left calf. The slugger reaggravated the injury and had to leave Saturday’s contest against the Rockies.
Braun has been dealing with the leg issue for some time now, as the injury originated July 2nd. An MRI revealed inflammation in the tendon behind Braun’s left knee, forcing him to miss the two games prior to last week’s break as well as the All-Star game itself.
The 27 year old once again felt discomfort in his left leg while running to first during an otherwise routine groundout Saturday evening. Braun was held out of Sunday’s lineup as a precaution.
"“When I took him out yesterday, he was feeling it more than he was the day before,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “Today [head athletic trainer Roger Caplinger] thought he needed the day off, and then he may be OK for tomorrow.”"
Milwaukee hopes that by proceeding carefully with their All-Star left fielder, Braun will be able to avoid missing significant time on the disabled list.
"“I’m hoping that the time off he had before the break, that it healed up that area,” Roenicke said. “Right now I’m hoping that we’re just day to day. Hopefully it just continues to get better and we don’t get to the point where we need to back him off for a couple weeks.”"
Mark Kotsay replaced Braun in left field Sunday. Milwaukee begins a series in Arizona tonight as they continue to try to hold off the Pirates and Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.
