Carlos Beltran Traded to Giants

In a quick turn of events, it appears that slugger Carlos Beltran is heading to the Giants for top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler.  The major trade seems to be all but a done deal at this point.

Everyone knew that it was just a matter of time before Beltran was shipped out of New York and the Giants have coveted the right fielder since he was made available.  The surprising part is not the fact that Beltran landed in San Francisco but what the Giants gave up to acquire him.

Reports were out yesterday talking about how the Mets had been rebuffed by several clubs when New York demanded high ranking prospects in return for two months of Beltran.  Rumor had it that the list of players off limits included none other than Zach Wheeler.

It was said that a lot of rival executives thought the Mets would have to lower their demands and expect more of a mid level prospect or simply salary relief in exchange for Beltran.

Oh the difference a day can make.

San Francisco has been one of the rumored leaders in negotiations but many thought that the Beltran sweepstakes would come down to a battle between NL East foes Philadelphia and Atlanta.

That doesn’t seem to be the case as Beltran and $4 million are apparently heading to San Francisco for Wheeler.

After the price for Beltran seemed to be lessening yesterday, this move has to be considered a coup for the Mets.  In Wheeler they receive a top 50 minor league prospect and the former 6th overall pick in the 2009 draft.  Currently in High-A as a 21 year old, Wheeler has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.99 and 1.375 on the year.

Beltran will add a significant boost to a Giants offense that has been stymied by injuries.  San Francisco’s lineup has been one of the worst in the league, as the club has depended on its pitching to carry them this season.  Insert Beltran, and now not only the Giants’ chances to win the NL West, but to compete for another National League pennant are increased.

Until then, continue to enjoy the madness that is deadline week.
