Jason Giambi Hits DL

Jason Giambi landed on the 15 day disabled list last night with a strained left quad.  The move takes one of Colorado’s trade chips off the table for the time being.

Giambi has been ridiculously efficient in 2011.  Though 10 home runs and 24 RBI’s may not sound like impressive numbers at this point in the season, the 40 year old has been able to put them up over only 112 plate appearances.

Used primarily as a pinch hitter, Giambi has produced a line of .260/.357/.625 on the year.  Colorado has mostly called on Giambi to face right handed pitching, and he’s delivered with an OPS of 1.014.  He’s only had 20 at bats against lefties, but he’s still managed an .860 OPS against south paws.

As the deadline approached Colorado had been fielding calls on the slugger, as contenders coveted his lefty power for their bench.  Pittsburgh and Philadelphia were known to have interest, with others checking in as well.

While Giambi will be on the DL through the July 31st trade deadline, Colorado can still move him in August if they are able to pass the slugger through waivers.

Colorado didn’t make a corresponding roster move before last night’s game against the Dodgers, but are expected to recall Chris Nelson from Triple-A to fill Giambi’s spot.
