Ervin Santana Fires No Hitter
By Editorial Staff
Ervin Santana reminded fans that there are actually games being played during this last week of July, as the right hander tossed a no hitter against the Cleveland Indians.
Wednesday’s game started out fairly unassuming and if anything you would have thought opposing pitcher David Huff would be the one to toss a no-no after the first two innings.
Santana didn’t have to worry about the added pressure of throwing a perfect game or even a shutout beyond the first. Ezequiel Carrera, the first batter he faced, reached on an error by shortstop Erick Aybar. After swiping second base and moving to third on a ground out, Carrera came home to score on a wild pitch.
Santana was able to recover nicely after his wild first inning, retiring the next 19 batters he faced before surrendering a walk to Lonnie Chisenhall in the bottom of the 8th.
On the night, Santana was only really saved by one extra nice play in the field. In the 6th inning, second baseman Howie Kendrick ranged far to his right to deny Jason Kipnis a hit and preserve the no-no.
All told, Santana struck out 10 batters with the one walk mentioned while throwing 76 of his 105 pitches for strikes.
The 28 year old became the 9th Angels’ pitcher to no-hit an opponent, while lowering his ERA and WHIP to 3.47 and 1.16 on the year.
