Jered Weaver Receives 6 Game Suspension

Punishment has officially been handed down from league officials as a result of Sunday’s wild contest between the Angels and Tigers.  Jered Weaver has received a 6 game suspension for throwing over the head of Alex Avila after both benches were warned.

Mike Scioscia was also banned for a game, as the throw came after a warning had been issued, and he served his suspension during that night’s contest against the Twins.

But Weaver has elected to appeal the ban, stating that he would like to share his opinion and side of the story with the league before accepting punishment.

Even though he is hoping to go through the appeal process, Weaver understands the situation and why he’s in this position.

"“Baseball’s a game of emotions,” he said. “I’m not one to usually let the emotions get the best of me. I’ve had a pretty calm career so far. There’s just some things that kind of cross the line and I thought maybe that was one of those things and didn’t want to take that. I did what I did and obviously have to pay the repercussions for it.”"

Weaver initially became miffed Sunday when he felt Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez was showing him up at the plate after hitting a home run.  Ordonez later stated and many seem to agree that he was simply remaining at the plate to judge if the hit was going to be fair or foul.  Either way, Weaver was not happy and showed it.

Later on in the contest, Carlos Guillen also connected for a long ball against the right hander.  This time he went out of his way to show up Weaver, going through an entire stare, trot and bat flip routine.

Weaver was incensed and threw the next pitch over Avila’s head, resulting in his immediate ejection.

Weaver has been one of the game’s best this season, posting an AL best ERA of 1.88 to go along with his 0.94 WHIP.  Though it certainly would be a blow for the Angels to be without their ace for any amount of time, even if the suspension isn’t reduced Weaver would only be forced to miss a single start.
