Yankees vs. Red Sox series are always popular, even during early season action.  But get later into the summer with the playoff race heating up and that’s when attention really begins to turn towards this historic rivalry.

This weekend continued to prove that fact when the Yanks and Sox battled for the AL East lead.  New York took game one to claim sole ownership of first place, but Boston quickly retook the top spot after winning the next two.

Three networks majorly cashed in on the series as FOX, ESPN and MLB Network all posted record viewer numbers.

Friday night’s game was the highest-rated game on the MLB network this year and second highest of all time behind only Stephen Strasburg’s debut last season.

Saturday’s game was in the afternoon and combined with the Phillies-Giants game became the most-watched non-primetime regular season game on FOX in over three years.  4.10 million fans tuned in to watch the games.

Finally, ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball was the most-watched baseball game broadcast by the Worldwide Leader in Sports in more than 4 years.  Sunday evening, a whopping 4.72 million viewers watched the series finale.
