Carlos Zambrano Apologizes… Again

Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano has once again come out with an apology to the organization stemming from his retirement talk this weekend.

After surrendering a career high 5 home runs to the Braves Friday night, Zambrano proceeded to clear out his locker and informed the club he was ready to retire.

Now he’s ready to rescind those statements, citing frustration as the cause of another of his infamous tirades.

"“I want to keep pitching for the Cubs,” Zambrano said in the report. “It was a moment of frustration Friday night, and I pitched so bad I wanted to retire, you know, I don’t want to be making $18 million and pitch like crap.”"

This was another of the many moments of frustration brought on by Zambrano, and the Cubs seemingly have had enough.  The team placed Big Z on the 30 day disqualified list, citing it was the worst possible punishment they could hand down without releasing their pitcher.

In his statement, Zambrano says that if the Cubs welcome him back following his time off, he will gladly rejoin the club.  According to the right hander, he will always be a Cubbie at heart.

He mentions that if the Cubs don’t want him back, and it hasn’t yet been determined if they do, he will simply have to continue his pitching career with another club.

But, as the deadline approached last month, there were reports that the Cubs were willing to eat much of Zambrano’s contract in order to facilitate a trade.  No one bit.

So Big Z needs to get real if he thinks that his on and off the field “performances” will inspire other clubs to line up for his services.

This is just turning into an ugly relationship.  Zambrano’s the verbally and physically (to bats and other clubhouse equipment) abusive player who tries to smooth things over with an apology.  The Cubs have taken him back in the past because of his huge contract and solid numbers.

But this year’s different.  Zambrano’s having a down year and is inching closer to the end of his mega deal.  If I’m the Cubs I’d be done with the disgrace that he’s become.
