The Philadelphia Phillies made a long expected roster move yesterday when they placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15 day disabled list.

To replace Polanco, the Phils called up right hander Michael Schwimer from Triple-A.  For more on the 6’8” reliever, check out fellow Call to the Pen contributor Justin Klugh’s write up.

Polanco last played for the Phillies August 6th but has been out since while dealing with what’s been diagnosed as a sports hernia.  Philadelphia hoped that resting the 35 year old would allow him to avoid an extended stretch on the DL.

But Polanco hasn’t been able to recover as hoped, and the Phillies will continue resting him through the week and into this weekend.

Usually at this point surgery is a next option for players, but if Polanco were to undergo an operation he would be lost for the year.

Polanco says that the pain is something he can deal with if he’s forced to but is hoping the discomfort lessens with additional rest.

Yesterday marked Polanco’s second trip to the DL.  He was sidelined for most of July with lower back inflammation.

On the year Polanco’s hit at a clip o f.275/.330/.342.  After a hot April start (.972 OPS) his numbers have continually declined as the summer’s progressed.
