The New York Yankees placed starting pitcher Freddy Garcia on the 15 day disabled list yesterday with a cut on the index finger of his throwing hand.  To fill his spot on their roster, the Yankees claimed lefty reliever Aaron Laffey off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Garcia last appeared for the Yankees August 7th against the Red Sox, but has been sidelined since with by a sliced finger.  New York plans on having Garcia make a Minor League rehab start Monday before rejoining the club next weekend.

The veteran has offered the Yankees much more than expected this season.  Garcia was added on a Minor League deal this February but has been one of New York’s best starters, posting an 3.16 ERA over his 21 appearances.

Laffey was designated for assignment by Seattle earlier last week.  He was solid out of the Mariners’ pen to begin the season but struggled through the end of July and into August.

After he carried an ERA of 1.87 into the All-Star Break, Laffey witnessed the number balloon to 4.01 over his last 7 starts.  During that span, Laffey allowed 12 earned runs on 20 hits in only 8 innings.

A former starter, Laffey provides the ability to log multiple innings, one of the reasons New York was interested in the 26 year old.  Laffey also gives the Yankees another left hander out of the pen.
