Carlos Quentin Hits DL; Dayan Viciedo Called Up

The Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the disabled list last night, and, in a long awaited move, called up top prospect Dayan Viciedo from Triple-A.

Quentin has been out since injuring his left shoulder last Saturday.  While making a diving catch during the first inning of Chicago’s contest against the Rangers, Quentin strained the AC joint in his left shoulder.

After laying out to make the grab, Quentin showed he had the ball and then immediately hit the ground, holding his left shoulder.  Quentin was in obvious pain and had to be helped off the field by the White Sox training staff.

Chicago kept Quentin on their roster, but he hasn’t progressed as the team had hoped.  Quentin felt discomfort in his shoulder while taking swings last night and the team decided a trip the DL was necessary.

"“We tried, but I told you guys in Anaheim I wasn’t too sure because he was very sore,” said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. “I know he’s not going to be ready soon, the way I thought he was going to be. It’s not fair for him to come every day here and be rushed and hurried because we’re missing a player. I think the best thing we did was put him on the DL and give him plenty of time to recover and get 100 percent, and hopefully it’s better for everyone.”"

On the year, Quentin has posted a line of .255/.341/.501 with 24 home runs, 31 doubles and 77 RBI’s.

White Sox faithful have been anticipating the promotion of Viciedo since the youngster impressed in his late season call up last year.

Over his 38 games with the club in 2010, Viciedo managed an impressive OPS of .840 with 12 extra base hits and 13 RBI’s.

The 22 year old has spent the entire 2011 season playing for Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate.  Viciedo has hit at a clip of .296/.364/.491.  He’s greatly increased his walk rate (45 in 2011 versus only 11 in 2010), while posting impressive power numbers (20 home runs and 28 doubles).

Chicago hopes Viciedo can pick up where he left off last season as the club continues to chase the Indians and Tigers in the NL Central.
