Brennan Boesch Elects Season Ending Surgery

Brennan Boesch announced yesterday that he has elected to undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb.  The procedure, which could take place as soon as this week, is expected to sideline Boesch for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Boesch sprained his thumb back on the 10th of August while taking a swing against the Cleveland Indians.  Later last month, Boesch worsened the injury, again during a game against the Indians.

Boesch’s last start came on an August 24th game in Tampa Bay, but the 26 year old wasn’t able to complete a full 9.  Boesch removed himself and has only appeared as a pinch runner since.

Detroit and Boesch both wanted to avoid surgery until the offseason, as it was expected to cause the outfielder to miss most if not all of the remaining season.  Boesch has tried rehab and injections but nothing’s been able to alleviate the pain.  Finally, Boesch has opted for surgery.

Regarding a time frame for return, it will take Boesch a little over a month before he can even use his hand for everyday activities.  It would then be another few weeks before Boesch would get himself back into playing shape.

Boesch had a solid first half of the season for Detroit, hitting at a clip of .302/.360/.477 through June.  Injuries have taken their toll since the All-Star break, and Boesch will likely finish the year with a line of .283/.341/.458.

Without Boesch, Detroit will turn to a few different players to fill in.  Recent addition Delmon Young provides the club with some insurance, and Magglio Ordonez is expected to see more time in Boesch’s absence.
