Hunter Pence Day-to-Day with Sprained Knee

Hunter Pence informed the general public yesterday morning that his right knee that kept him out of the second game of Tuesday’s double header was “feeling great” and that he hoped to “get back at it” Wednesday.  While Pence may have felt he was back in playing shape, an MRI exam told a different story.

After Pence came up limping following his single in the 6th inning of Tuesday’s afternoon contest with Washington, Philadelphia decided it best for the former Astro to sit out the nightcap and undergo an MRI.  Merely precautionary, the exam did uncover a mild strain of Pence’s patellar tendon.  The Phillies are listing Pence as day-to-day, expecting the outfielder to return sometime this weekend.

Pence has dealt with knee problems all season, and he said that if the club was still in the middle of a playoff race he would be able to play.  But, with the Phillies having clinched their 5th straight National League East title, the club has decided to take it easy with Pence.  Philadelphia’s main focus is getting Pence back healthy for postseason play.

Pence has been fantastic since coming over from Houston in a late July trade.  Over his two months with the Phillies, Pence has hit .323 with 9 home runs, 11 doubles and 28 RBI’s.  On the year, Pence has maintained a line of .313/.368/.494 with 20 home runs, 38 two-baggers and 90 RBI’s.
