Theo Epstein to Cubs Compensation Talks Continue

While it was reported yesterday that talks between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox regarding Theo Epstein turned “contentious”, the sides are now expected to come to an agreement before the World Series begins next Wednesday.  It’s all but guaranteed that Epstein will become the next general manager of the Cubs, with the only thing holding up the deal being Boston’s compensation for the GM.

As with the White Sox and Ozzie Guillen, Boston is due compensation if Epstein leaves because he has a year remaining on his current contract with the Red Sox.  While the Cubs would prefer to keep this a cash-only deal, the Red Sox are looking to receive prospects in return for Epstein.

Several of the Cubs top prospects have been included in Epstein rumors, but nothing has been made official.  It’s been reported that Brett Jackson, Chicago’s top Minor Leaguer, will not be sent to Boston in return for Epstein. Other top players in the Cubs system include position players Matt Szczur and Josh Vitters and right-handed pitchers Chris Carpenter and Trey McNutt.

What is yet to be determined is if other top Red Sox executives will be joining Epstein in Chicago.  Boston originally said that no one would be following Epstein, but Theo is apparently trying to bring staffers with him to the Cubs.  Boston would look for an increased level of compensation if multiple members leave their front office, only furthering the complications surrounding negotiations.

It may seem like the chasm between each side is growing wider by the day, but the upcoming World Series may act as a light at the end of the tunnel.  Major League Baseball discourages teams from making significant announcements during the Fall Classic, not wanting to take any attention away from baseball’s biggest games.

The Rangers have already clinched their berth, and the Cardinals could do the same later tonight.  Game one of the World Series is scheduled for Wednesday and some are speculating a deal will be announced prior to the opener.
