White Sox Trade Carlos Quentin to Padres

The Chicago White Sox have traded outfielder Carlos Quentin to the San Diego Padres for minor league pitchers Simon Castro and Pedro Hernandez.

While the White Sox proved they were not completely cleaning house with the John Danks extension, they apparently did not see Quentin as a part of their future plans. Moving Quentin will allow the White Sox to move top prospect Dayan Viciedo into an everyday role.

Last season for the White Sox, Quentin hit at a clip of .254/.340/.499 with 24 home runs and 77 RBI’s. Over his six seasons in the majors, Quentin has posted a line of .252/.346/.490. The 29-year-old made just over $5 million last season.

Before his disappointing 2011 season, Castro was regarded as one of the Padres top pitching prospects. The 23-year-old right-hander only managed an ERA and WHIP of 5.63 and 1.443 last season but has career minor league marks of 4.24 and 1.292. Castro, who pitched at the Double and Triple-A levels last year, has maintained a SO/9 of 8.7 and a BB/9 of 3.1 over his six seasons in the minors.

Hernandez spent last season pitching for the Padres High, Double and Triple-A affiliates, posting an ERA and WHIP of 3.49 and 1.216. The 19-year-old has a career SO/9 of 8.0 and BB/9 of 1.5.
