Gerardo Concepcion Rumors: Concepcion Close to Signing
With one well known Cuban player hitting free agency, it looks like another may be poised to exit the market. Yoennis Cespedes was declared a free agent Wednesday and the bidding is expected to begin in a big way. Meanwhile, fellow Cuban native Gerardo Concepcion is reportedly close to signing with a major league club. Earlier this week Concepcion’s agent told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com that the Rangers, Yankees, Cubs and White Sox had all expressed the most interest in his client thus far.
Concepcion was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball a little over a week ago. Though the 18-year-old is not seen as major league ready at this point, many teams expressed interest in Concepcion once he officially hit the market. Beyond the four clubs mentioned above, Concepcion has been tied to the Marlins, Phillies, Giants, Blue Jays, Red Sox and Royals.
Yesterday Concepcion’s agent told Rojas that Concepcion has received offers from as many as 10 teams and said the left-hander could sign by this weekend. Concepcion, who’s been working out in the Dominican Republic, has called the experience “a dream come true”.
