Yoenis Cespedes Rumors: Giants not Pursuing Cespedes

facebooktwitterreddit

When Yoennis Cespedes initially declared his intent to join Major League Baseball, all news involving the Cuban native surrounded the vast number of interested teams.  However, over the past few days we’ve heard from a pair of clubs that will not be in on Cespedes this offseason.  The Blue Jays have already said they are not interested in Cespedes and it appears that Giants are taking the same stance.

During yesterday’s annual FanFast, Giants general manager Brian Sabean fielded a question regarding his club’s interest in Cespedes.  Sabean indicated that the Giants will not be pursuing Cespedes this winter because the outfielder’s “price tag is probably beyond what his talent is”.

This potential price tag has been a hot topic around baseball since Cespedes’s initial ‘training video’ was released.  From the start, most expected the slugger to command a deal in the $30 million range, comparable to the one fellow Cuban native Aroldis Chapman inked with the Reds.

Since then, this number has fluctuated, reaching as high as double the original $30 million.  While some analysts believe this high of a price is unlikely to be paid for Cespedes, it’s hard to predict what will happen when a player hits the open market.

While the Blue Jays and Giants are likely out of the Cespedes sweepstakes, several teams remain tied to Yoennis including the Phillies, Marlins, Tigers, White Sox, Yankees, Cubs and Indians.
