Yoenis Cespedes Rumors: Cespedes Returning to DR?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Yoenis Cespedes show touched down in the United States Tuesday, seemingly prepared to embark on a team-to-team negotiating tour.  However, ESPN’s Jayson Stark is now reporting that Cespedes and his crew could pack things up and head back to the Dominican Republic as soon as today.  Cespedes has already met with the Miami Marlins, but many expected the enigma to conduct face-to-face meetings with other interested clubs including the Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Indians and Orioles.

Cespedes met with Marlins ownership and management yesterday.  The club took Cespedes and his agent, Adam Katz, out to lunch before showing the slugger their new confines in Little Havana.  According to Katz, the Marlins put on quite the show.  Katz characterized negotiations with the Marlins as “ongoing and productive” but added that “there are several other teams in the mix” for Cespedes.

Several of these other teams figured to get a sit down with the Cuban defector during his trip to the States.  However, no other meetings have been confirmed and Stark heard from Katz that nothing is scheduled.  Katz added that Cespedes could return to the DR as soon as today.

While Cespedes has been declared a free agent, he is still waiting on the Treasury Department to unblock him.  Before they do, all Cespedes and his agent can do is negotiate a contract, they won’t be able to officially sign anything until they are cleared by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.  Cespedes’s representation maintains hope that they will be able to have their agent signed before Spring Training.
