Pirates Notes: Arbitration Updates on Casey McGehee and Garrett Jones

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered the week with a pair of pending arbitration cases.  One of these cases took place yesterday and the other was avoided.  The Pirates were able to beat slugger Garrett Jones in their arbitration hearing and avoid a similar meeting with offseason acquisition Casey McGehee.

Jones and his representation filed for a 2012 salary of $2.5 million, but an arbitration panel instead awarded the 30-year-old the $2.25 million the Pirates offered.  It was Jones’ first year of arbitration eligibility, as he isn’t set to hit the open market until after the 2015 season.

Over parts of three seasons with the Pirates, Jones has hit at a clip of .25/.326/.456.  During this time, Jones has primarily manned the outfield corners and first base for Pittsburgh, and has surpassed the 20 home run plateau twice.

Soon after it was announced that the Pirates were meeting with Jones, it was reported that Pittsburgh was able to avoid an arbitration hearing with corner infielder Casey McGehee.  McGehee and the Pirates agreed on a one-year contract worth $2.5375 million.

Pittsburgh acquired McGehee in December in a trade with the Brewers.  In his three seasons with Milwaukee, McGehee posted a line of .267/.322/.430.

With resolutions being reached in the cases of Jones and McGehee, the Pirates have no other arbitration eligible players without contracts.
