Scott Sizemore has Torn ACL; Will Miss 2012 Season

Last night we learned that another season has ended due to injury before it even began.  Within two hours of the start of the Oakland Athletics first full-squad workout Saturday, third baseman Scott Sizemore had to be helped off the field.  After fearing the worst, the A’s officially received the bad news yesterday; Sizemore has a torn ACL in his left knee and will be forced to miss the entire 2012 season.

Entering the spring, Oakland hoped Sizemore would offer a strong solution at the hot corner.  Acquired from the Detroit Tigers in May of 2011, Sizemore was considered by some to be primed for a breakout season.

Unfortunately this anticipated production will have to wait another year to surface.  Because of the swelling, an exact time frame for recovery is unknown.  What is clear is that the 27-year-old will be forced to sit out the entire 2012 season.

With news of Sizemore’s injury, the A’s are forced into a hurried search for a solution at third base.  It’s being reported that the club will first give a shot to Josh Donaldson, a former catching prospect who was acquired in the Rich Harden trade.

If Oakland doesn’t feel comfortable with Donaldson as their everyday man at third, the club could look outside the organization for a solution.  Oakland currently sports a bevy of first baseman and could match up with another club in a trade later this spring.
