Carl Crawford Faces Setback While Rehabbing Wrist Injury

The Boston Red Sox were expecting to start the 2012 regular season without star left fielder Carl Crawford as he recovered from offseason wrist surgery.  Still, the Red Sox were hoping to get their multi-million dollar investment back on the field as soon as possible.  Unfortunately for the Red Sox, this recovery may not be as speedy as originally hoped.

Boston recently received bad news regarding Crawford’s potential return.  Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported yesterday that Crawford’s speed recovery has hit a road block, as the left fielder indicated he’s experienced swelling in his left wrist.

Members of the media were tipped off that something might be ailing Crawford yesterday because he didn’t take any swings in the batting cage.  Crawford admitted that he’s “always concerned when there’s a setback”.  While he doesn’t know how severe the inflammation is, a doctor has told him that “it doesn’t look that bad”.  Crawford said the setback blindsided him as he had been “feeling real good”.

Crawford underwent surgery on his left wrist this offseason.  While no timeframe was announced, manager Bobby Valentine told the press that Crawford would likely miss “a few weeks” of the regular season last month.

It’s unfortunate for the Red Sox, but probably more so for Crawford himself.  The four-time All-Star must be itching to get healthy and return to the field so that he can improve upon his disappointing 2011 campaign.
