Nick Hundley, San Diego Padres Extension Talks “Heating Up”

Earlier this month, the San Diego Padres were able to lock up center fielder Cameron Maybin for the next five years.  Now it’s being reported that the Padres are working hard to nail out another contract extension with another of their core players; catcher Nick Hundley.

Yesterday, Corey Brock of MLB.com tweeted that extension talks between the Padres and Hundley are “heating up”.  Talks have not recently developed, but instead have gone back to when Jed Hoyer was still running things in San Diego.  Brock finished his tweet by saying an agreement “could be close”.

Hundley, 28, is under team control through the 2015 season.  The backstop is set to make $2 million in 2012, which will be the first season in which he’s earned more than $450,000.

Making his major league debut in 2008, Hundley only posted mediocre numbers at the dish before last season.  Then, in 2012, Hundley hit at a clip of .288/.347/.477, all of which represented career highs for the catcher.  Over his 308 plate appearances, Hundley tallied 30 extra base hits.
