Mike Carp Hits DL with Sprained Shoulder

The Seattle Mariners have placed left fielder Mike Carp on their 15-day disabled list due to a sprained right shoulder.  Carp sustained the injury during Wednesday’s Opener.  The Mariners have recalled Carlos Peguero from Triple-A to take Carp’s spot on their active roster.

Carp injured his shoulder during the 4th inning of Wednesday’s contest while diving for a ball off the bat of Kurt Suzuki that ultimately went for a double.  Carp remained in the game, which the Mariners eventually won in 11 innings, but was replaced in left field Thursday by Chone Figgins.

It’s a disappointing start for a player many had high hopes for entering the season.  In his limited stint with the Mariners last year, Carp hit 12 home runs and 17 doubles over his 290 at-bats.  The Mariners had the 25-year-old batting sixth in their already offensively-challenged lineup, so the club is hoping Carp’s injury won’t sideline him for an extended period.

If all goes well, Carp could be ready to go for Seattle’s home opener on April 13.  He will be re-evaluated today.

Peguero spent 46 games with the Mariners last season.  Over his 143 at-bats, Peguero posted an OPS of .622.  The 25-year-old did hit at a clip of .317/.364/.558 in Triple-A in 2011 and sports a career minor league OPS of .838.
