Brandon Allen Claimed by Tampa Bay Rays

A week and a half after being designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics, Brandon Allen was claimed off of waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays.  The 26-year-old has spent four seasons at that major league level with the Diamondbacks and A’s.

In somewhat of a surprise move, the A’s decided to designate Allen to make room for Daric Barton when they activated the first baseman from their disabled list.  Oakland entered the season with a slew of options at first base, including Barton, Allen and Kila Ka’aihue, and they decided that Allen was the odd man out.

It makes sense that another team is willing to take a chance on Allen considering his track record in the minors as well as the flashes he’s shown at the major league level.

Over parts of three seasons in Triple-A, Allen has maintained a line of .286/.401/.555.  Unfortunately for Allen this hasn’t translated to success in the bigs, as the left-handed hitting slugger has only mustered a line of .205/.291/.375 at the major league level.
