Chris Narveson to DL; May Be Done for Season

The Milwaukee Brewers have placed left-hander Chris Narveson on their 15-day disabled list with a torn rotator cuff.  Depending on the results of the second opinion on his injured shoulder, Narveson could be in line to undergo season-ending surgery.  In a corresponding roster move, the Brewers recalled right-handed reliever Mike McClendon.

Narveson told the Brewers he was experiencing discomfort in his shoulder Monday, a day after he faced the Atlanta Braves and surrendered five earned runs over his four innings of work.  This prompted an MRI which revealed a significant tear in Narveson’s right rotator cuff.

Narveson and the Brewers expect the final verdict to be surgery, which would like end the 30-year-old’s 2012 campaign.  However, Narveson is seeking a second opinion to hopefully avoid going under the knife and missing the entire season.

Narveson has made 28 starts for the Brewers in each of the past two seasons, and has maintained a career major league ERA and WHIP of 4.67 and 1.373.

The Brewers have said that right-hander Marco Estrada will take Narveson’s place in their starting rotation.  Estrada has spent five years pitching at the major league level but has mostly been used as a reliever.  The 28-year-old has a career ERA and WHIP of .4.98 and 1.323 with 8.8 SO/9 and 3.3 BB/9.
