Emilio Bonifacio has been placed on the Miami Marlins 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb.  The Marlins have recalled former Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan from Triple-A to take Bonifacio’s spot on their roster.

Bonifacio sustained the injury during Friday night’s contest against the Cleveland Indians.  Bonifacio was trying to steal a base when the sprain occurred.

A Saturday MRI determined that there was no significant damage to Bonifacio’s thumb, but the trip to the DL was ultimately deemed necessary.  While he will be forced to miss the next two weeks of action, Bonifacio is expected to return to the Marlins when he’s eligible to come off the DL.

While he manned the Marlins infield for most of the 2011 season, Bonifacio has been Miami’s primary center fielder during their 2012 campaign.  On the season, Bonifacio has maintained a line of .268/.351/.315 with 19 runs scored and a league-leading 20 stolen bases.

Bonifacio got off to a rough start to the season, posting an OPS of .574 through April, but had rebounded before his injury.  During the month of May, Bonifacio maintained a line of .302/.380/.413.

Coghlan, who was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2009, had been with the Marlins earlier this season.  An ugly start (.290 OPS) led to a demotion to Triple-A, where Coghlan has maintained a line of .275/.311/.362 over his 69 at-bats this season.

Coghlan owns a career major league OPS of .751, though those numbers are mostly influenced by his strong rookie campaign.
