MLB’s Memorial Day Caps: Some Notable Examples
I just now realized that in order to properly introduce the body of this post I’ll have to write about Memorial Day. I don’t want to write about Memorial Day. It’s not that I have anything against Memorial Day—I feel quite the contrary, in fact—it’s just that I sort of trade in baseball nonsense and mediocre jokes, and Memorial Day isn’t really anything to joke about. I mean, sure, I could probably come up with one or two if I really had to, but, you know what, forget it. Let’s move on. Memorial Day doesn’t have anything to do with baseball, either, at least not in any directly appreciable way—but don’t tell Major League Baseball that, because they’re making new hats.
Yes, hats. Now we’re talking about the hats and not the other thing that the hats are related to. Did you know that some people call hats “caps?” I would imagine the breakdown of term preference would be similar to that of the great “pop” and “soda” debate. About 50/50, probably. I’m a hat and pop kind of guy. You might be a cap and soda type of person. That’s cool, we can still be friends. We can cultivate a friendship around the shared knowledge of you being wrong.
About these hats we’re having so much fun talking about: MLB has decided to forgo its usual Red White and Blue Patriotic Holiday Color Scheme in favor of a much different, pixelated desert camouflage-type design. It is my belief that certain teams and colors and logos look quite nice with the new camouflage scheme, while other teams and colors and logos look pretty terrible. Let’s discuss some notable examples of each.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Black
This showcases a completely pleasant and acceptable use of the style. The black of the hat meshes well with just about any pattern, and the yellow outline of the “P” lends a nice, complimentary touch to the shades of the camouflage.
Baltimore Orioles – Black/White/Orange
I don’t think there’s a color scheme or logo in the game that’s more ill-equipped for this style of hat. And here are both, in combination.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim – Red
It’s kind of fun to imagine a bunch of angels all flying around together wearing camouflage robes and halos and sandals and stuff. This is not a particularly good looking hat, however.
Miami Marlins – Orange
Ahahahaha.
Cleveland Indians – Blue/Red
Yep, still racist.
San Diego Padres – Brown
Seeing as the Padres are no stranger to camouflage themed uniforms, it would make sense for their cap to be aesthetically pleasing. In other news, that was the first time in this entire post that I’ve spelled camouflage correctly without having to use spell check. I’m learning!
Seattle Mariners – Image Coming Soon
Oh man, that is just perfect. The jokes practically write themselves! I think I’ll take the easy road here and opt for “Presented without comment.” Can you do that even after and while continuing to make comments? I’d like to try.
