Chicago Cubs Notes: Chris Volstad, Casey Coleman, Brett Jackson, Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs own the worst record in baseball.  They are clearly rebuilding, and they intend to do so with home-grown talent.  Beyond that, their home ballpark needs some rebuilding of its own.  Here are you Cubs notes:

  • The Cubs haven’t been ravaged by injuries to their pitcher as much as other teams, but they do have some holes to fill.  Tuesday’s starter is one of those holes.  Ryan Dempster, Lendy Castillo, and Blake Parker are all on the DL.  According to Carrie Muskat, beat writer for MLB.com, the Cubs are still deciding on who will make the July 3rd start against the Braves.  Muskat says the starter could be Chris Volstad or Casey Coleman.  If it were Coleman, it would be his first start this year.
  • The Cubs next big prospect,

    Brett Jackson

, has been the topic of conversation around the north side of

Chicago since Anthony Rizzo’s call-up.  Carrie Muskat answered fan questions recently and said Jackson’s call-up would have nothing to do with Alfonso Soriano‘s status with the team.  She says Jackson’s strikeouts are the one thing keeping him from a promotion right now, but the team is keeping a close eye on him.

  • Despite the excitement around Brett Jackson, Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Chicago Sun-Times thinks Cubs fans could be in for a long wait for their next big prospect to hit the Majors.  He says, “But the best of the best-looking Cubs prospects are in Class A ball (Javier Baez, Dillon Maples, Matt Szczur, etc.) and years away from their debuts.”
  • Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says the Cubs are learning from the Red Sox renovation early in Theo Epstein’s tenure there, and they hope to implement many of the things Boston did with their historic ballpark in an update on Wrigley Field.  However, as it stands now the Cubs’ owners, the Ricketts Family, are still trying to find funding for the renovation project.”The Cubs have had a difficult time getting public support and funding for their plan, and their relationship with Mayor Rahm Emanuel has cooled considerably over the last couple of months.”
