Jose Bautista Done for Season

The Toronto Blue Jays announced Tuesday that star slugger Jose Bautista will undergo season-ending surgery on his troublesome left wrist. He will miss the remainder of the season but does expect to be ready for Spring Training. Bautista, who lead the American League in home runs each of the last two seasons, injured the wrist in July and spent several weeks on the disabled list before being activated last week. That return to action didn’t hold, however, as the Jays placed Bautista back on the DL on Sunday.

While this is obviously a big blow for the Blue Jays, the club wasn’t going to work their way back into contention this year, even if Bautista had come back fully healed. Toronto will use the rest of the campaign to regroup and play the spoiler role. Admittedly, that would be much easier to do with Bautista anchoring that lineup, but it’s far more important to get him right for next year and put some pieces around he and Edwin Encarnacion in the heart of the order.
