Today’s starters are Jarrod Parker (12-8, 3.97 ERA, 1.223 WHIP) for the visiting A’s. During the regular season, Oakland was 17-15 in games in which Parker started. The 24-year-old had a scintillating August (4-0, 2.23 ERA, 1.105 WHIP in 6 starts) but stumbled on the season’s last month. In his last regular season start, Parker allowed 7 runs and 7 hits in 4.1 innings.

The Tigers will counter with Anibal Sanchez (14-8, 2.57 ERA, 1.154 WHIP) who led the AL in ERA and ERA+ (163). Sanchez also had the AL’s lowest HR/9 (0.4) and was ranked in the top ten in several other AL pitching categories. The A’s must get to him in the first inning (triple slash against: .289/.362/.342) to have a chance as after the first, Sanchez buckles down after the initial frame.
