Someone likes A.J. Pierzynski, and it’s Dan Shaughnessy

It turns out not everyone in the world hates A.J. Pierzynski. Dan Shaughnessy met Pierzynski at spring training and I’ll be darned, the two hit it right off.

The world’s most hated columnist/Hall of Fame voting troll crushing on the world’s most hated ballplayer not named Alex Rodriguez? Sounds like true love.

Shaughnessy profiled Pierzynski for a piece in The Boston Globe, which heroically remains an actual published newspaper despite employing people like Dan Shaughnessy.

Mr. Shaughnessy found out a few things about A.J. He found out that A.J. loves pro wrestling. He found out A.J.’s grandpa played with Carl Yastrzemski’s dad. He found out A.J. never really kneed that coach in the nutsack.

He came to a completely brilliant conclusion about A.J. Pierzynski: he’s a guy who you love if he’s on your team, but hate if he’s on the other team.

NEVER heard that said about a player before. That’s why this guy gets the big bucks.

Shaughnessy of course had to ask A.J. about all those “Most Hated Man in Baseball” awards he’s won.

“I just laugh at it,” Pierzynski said. “I just think it’s cool.”

Somehow, Shaughnessy abstained from referring to A.J. as “a heel.” But you know it almost killed him.
