I hope Don Mattingly and the Dodgers learned their lesson.

Before Friday’s Dodgers-Giants game, Los Angeles announced that mercurial star outfielder Yasiel Puig would be benched for arriving late to the stadium.

Puig reportedly showed up to the ballpark at 10 AM…20 minutes after the team had begun stretching on the field.

Matt Kemp, who is fighting back from an injury-riddled 2013 season, was announced as the man to replace Puig in the starting lineup.

How did that decision work out for the Dodgers?

Just ask starting pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu. The Giants pummeled him and the Dodgers for 8 runs on 8 hits in the first two innings with Puig watching from his Gulag seat.

I can state with all confidence that had Mattingly not elected to bench Puig, the baseball gods would not have elected to enter the Giants’ bats and lay waste to the Dodgers, most thunderously destroy them, in most just and fitting fashion.

If this kind of stuff keeps up, Don Mattingly won’t last until the All-Star break. You don’t go against the baseball gods unless you want them to go Thor’s hammer on your butt.

Can I get a “Free Puig” up in here?
