Ron Washington speaks about resignation: “I was not true to my wife.”

Ron Washington has finally spoken out at a 2:30 pm ET press conference. He simply made a statement and did not take any follow up questions.

Washington who resigned as manager of the Texas Rangers unexpectedly on September 5, basically said that the reason for his resignation was that he cheated on his wife who has stood by him and is still standing by him.

Washington’s wife was in attendance at the conference, walking out from the back alongside her husband. Washington took the stage alone though.

"“I was not true to my wife after 42 years. I broke her trust,” Washington said."

He went on to say,

"“I’ve made a mistake, I’m embarrassed. More than I have ever been in my life….Today I am at a very low point in my life. I’m sorry for breaking that trust….This matter is certainly personal and we are trying to put it behind us.”"

He also apologized for breaking the trust of Major League Baseball, the Rangers organization, the players and the fans.

Washington who took the Rangers on to win two American League pennants in 2010 and 2011 stated that he is,

"“Looking to get back in the game and continuing my career.”"

I watched this press conference on a live feed thanks to the Texas Business Journal.

I don’t know about you but it seems like there may still be something that Washington is keeping under wraps.

If every baseball player, manager, executive that cheated on their spouse resigned because of it, well, there would be a lot more resignations. I’ll leave it at that.

Washington could be being truthful and possibly this is the only reason for his resignation. However, why take almost two weeks to speak out?

With all the rumors that have been flying around, one would think that he would have put the rumors to rest more swiftly.

Even though Washington has now supposedly given us the answer we have all been waiting for, it seems suspicious. He has continued to be vague about the matter, leaving us with just as many questions as we had before the press conference.

Something about the whole situation and the time table it took for him to speak about the matter just doesn’t sit right with me.

For now though, unless other news surfaces, we have to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, if any other information comes to light regarding Washington’s situation you’ll be able to find it here on Call to the Pen.
