Hall of Famer Willie McCovey hospitalized

Former San Francisco Giants’ first baseman and Hall of Famer Willie McCovey has been hospitalized, the Giants announced Friday.  The 76-year old was hospitalized due to complications following an infection.

McCovey who is now 76 years old played for the Giants in the 1960’s and famously made the final out of the 1962 World Series. He hit a liner straight to Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson. The Giants lost that World Series to the New York Yankees in seven games.

Despite that last out, McCovey, was known as one of the league’s most elite first baseman. He is a career .270 batter with 521 homers and 1,555 RBIs. He played in the Major Leagues for 22 seasons, 19 of which were with San Francisco.

He also spent time with the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres.

The Giants also tweeted out an address for fans to send their “Get Well” wishes to McCovey.

The Giants say they are in close contact with the McCovey family and will continue to release announcements regarding his recovery.
