The Atlanta Braves have dismissed their general manager Frank Wren from his position. The Braves also parted ways with executive vice president/assistant general manager Bruce Manno.
They have named baseball executive John Hart as their interim GM.
Team president John Schuerholz made the announcement during a scheduled press conference at Turner Field. The team also announced the new on their official Twitter page, shortly after Schuerholz made his statement.
This comes the day after Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets dashed any hope the Braves had had to secure a playoff berth. The Braves were mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday.
Schuerholz said it wasn’t a snap decision but that it was cumulative and that the fact it was time to change the Braves’ culture was evident early on in the season, even prior to their August eight-game losing streak.
"“It was time for the organization’s well-being,” Schuerholz said. “It was time, having been eliminated from any postseason possibility, rather than continue to wait, that it would give us an opportunity to form our committee and start this transition a week sooner than perhaps, and we thought it was the right day.”"
The Braves have put together a three person committee of Hart, Schuerholz and Hall of Fane manager Bobby Cox to find the Braves a new general manager.
"“I’m just glad to be a part of it, and I’m going to do anything I can with my ideas to help John Schuerholz and John Hart come to some conclusion about the team,” Cox said."
Even though the Braves have experienced more than one late season collapse under manager Fredi Gonzalez, Gonzalez’s job appears to be safe. He is close with Cox who will be taking on a bigger role within the organization.
