Nearly 10,000 D-Bat Dogs sold by Arizona Diamondbacks

Perhaps one of the biggest trends across MLB stadiums has been the addition of unusually large – and often ridiculous – food items at teams’ concessions stands. The D-Bat Dog is no exception, debuting this past season with resounding success.

The Arizona Diamondbacks figured they would have some fun selling the 18-inch corn dog stuffed with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, and bacon – all served with a full side of french fries. The team expected that they’d end up selling about 500 over the course of the season, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, but that was a gross miscalculation. D’backs CEO Derrick Hall instead told Rovell that the team sold a total of 9,517 of them – at $25 apiece.

That’s $237,925. In corn dogs.

"“Everyone wanted it, including all the visiting broadcast teams,” Hall said. “We’ve had these ‘wow’ items for some time, and most of the time they don’t stick. This one caught fire. It’s going to be hard to top this one.”"

Hall continued, adding that the team wound up needing to install three additional fryers over the course of the season to accommodate the demand. Their local supplier that they got the hot dogs from also had trouble keeping up with the team’s needs.

While the D’backs clearly had one major victory on their hands at the concession stands, but unfortunately their performance on the field wasn’t nearly as successful. Finishing the season with a 64-98 record, Arizona had the worst record in all of Major League Baseball in 2014 and the second worst run differential at –127 (only the Texas Rangers, also known for their big ticket concession items, finished worse). While plenty of changes have already begun with regards to Arizona’s personnel on the field and in the front office (new GM, new manager, and the expectation of having a busy offseason) there seems to be one major item that won’t be changing – the food.
