Kyle Seager and the Seattle Mariners have reached an agreement on a seven-year, $100 million extension that includes an option for an eighth year, according to a report from ESPN. Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan first reported that the extension was in place. In an All-Star 2014 season, Seager hit 25 home runs and slugged .454. He also took home his first AL Gold Glove Award, solidifying the fact that at just 27-years-old, he’s already considered among the top corner infielders in baseball.

Finances don’t appear to be an issue for Seattle. After giving Robinson Cano a $240 million deal last offseason and signing Felix Hernandez to a $175 million deal before that, this signifies another massive contract handed out by the organization. Big payouts and spending sprees are no longer reserved just for the major markets.

While the $100 million figure for Seager jumps out as initially surprising, the deal makes sense when analyzing his numbers and the third base market. Seager is a power hitter who somehow thrives in the spacious Seattle ballpark, plays stellar defense and doesn’t appear to have any issues off the field.

With limited options at third base across the game and their increasing value, locking up Seager was a necessary move. A stronger third baseman won’t be available via trade or found on the open market. Along with Cano and Hernandez, Seager is now an important piece of the Mariners’ future – one that they expect to be competing for playoffs berths in.
