Jed Lowrie drawing interest from multiple clubs

In a market light on quality middle infielders, interest in Jed Lowrie has started to pick up according to multiple reports. The Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, and San Francisco Giants all appear to be in the mix to varying degrees.

Lowrie spent the last two seasons with the Oakland Athletics, batting a collective .271/.334/.405 with 74 doubles and 21 home runs. He’s primarily been used at shortstop throughout his career, but has seen time at both second and third base.

Houston might appear to have the most serious interest among the three noted here. MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reported the team’s interest and the pairing would make a lot of sense. Lowrie could step in and provide depth across the infield, while also serving as a veteran stop gap until the team’s younger prospects – notably Carlos Correa and Colin Moran – are ready to step into the everyday lineup.

Miami’s interest largely centers on Lowrie’s ability to play positions besides shortstop. The team is believed to like their internal options, but an outside signing can’t be ruled out. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick notes that the Giants interest is largely tied to whether the team is able to sign Chase Headley first. They’d presumably look to use Lowrie at third base.

Oakland is expected to have some level of interest in bringing Lowrie back, particularly given the limited alternative options to fill their need at shortstop. It is also conceivable that the New York Mets could get involved.
