Free agent infielder Alberto Callaspo reportedly has a deal in place to join the Atlanta Braves, according to multiple reports. Terms are not yet known, but David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution relays that all that remains is a physical before it will be complete.

The Braves came into the Winter Meetings expecting to be active on the trade market, but also knowingly looking for an option who could handle playing second base. Callaspo not only addresses that need but also provides added depth around the infield. Primarily a third baseman throughout his career, Callaspo has also spent significant time at second but also at shortstop, first base, and the outfield corners.

The 31 year old switch hitter batted .223/.290/.290 this past season for the Oakland Athletics. He’s a career .267/.330/.370 hitter who has spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, and A’s.

Callaspo doesn’t give the Braves a superior option to fill their need at second base, but the veteran should provide enough consistency to serve as a solid stopgap option until Jose Peraza is ready to step into the major league lineup. Atlanta was recently linked to Stephen Drew to fill a similar role. He will likely end up signing for more than what Callaspo’s new deal will pay him.
