Jemile Weeks and Steve Lombardozzi, a pair of once promising middle infielders who’ve seen their share of struggles in the major leagues, have been outrighted to Triple-A by the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, respectively. The teams announced the moves Monday afternoon, clearing space on their 40-man rosters.

Weeks just joined the Red Sox this past August, coming over from the Orioles in exchange for Kelly Johnson. The 27 year old has severely struggled at the plate since his rookie season but looked sharp in 32 plate appearances with Boston down the stretch this past season. He’s a .260/.322/.360 hitter in his career.

A former 1st Round pick by the Oakland A’s in 2008, Weeks will give Boston some added infield depth at Triple-A.

Lombardozzi has more MLB experience under his belt, but has likewise struggled to produce much offensively. He’s provided a little more versatility on the defensive side, however, which brings some added value. In 277 games with the Washington Nationals and Orioles he’s a .266/.297/.341 hitter. He spent most of the 2014 season at Triple-A, where he hit .270/.307/.311 in 295 plate appearances.

Baltimore also outrighted left-hander Pat McCoy. The 26 year old had been claimed earlier this offseason off waivers from the Detroit Tigers, with whom he appeared in 14 games this past season. He struggled, allowing 21 hits and 13 walks in 14 IP.
