The Minnesota Twins announced that they will call up top prospect Byron Buxton to make his major league debut against the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Buxton joins a Minnesota team that sits two games back of the Royals in AL Central standings, and he could quickly surpass struggling center fielder Aaron Hicks (.247, 1 HR and 6 SB this season) with a marginally impressive showing in his first big league stint. The 21-year-old was hitting .283 with six home runs, 13 triples and 20 stolen bases at AA Chattanooga. He was also in the midst of a 10-game stretch where he hit .421 with hits in all 10 games.

The Twins selected Buxton with the second overall pick of the 2012 draft, and battled injuries through much of his minor-league career to this point. However, an impressive showing this season has allowed Buxton to join the likes of Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, Joey Gallo, Carlos Rodon and other top prospects to make their big league debuts in the 2015 season. He’ll see both Gallo and Bryant in the coming week, as the Twins take on the Rangers in Buxton’s debut and also have a three-game set with the Cubs from June 19-21.
