Roster Moves: Diamondbacks call up Allen Webster, designate J.C. Ramirez

The Diamondbacks designated reliever J.C. Ramirez for assignment on Saturday to make room for pitcher Allen Webster, the team’s starter against the Giants. Ramirez will now be subject to waivers.

Ramirez posted a mediocre 4.11 ERA in 15.1 innings out of the Arizona bullpen this year, but had a much more noteworthy 62.5% ground ball rate. At just 26 years old, this was the right-hander’s second taste of the big leagues, the other stint coming in 2013 with the Phillies.

This will be Webster’s varsity squad debut for Arizona, after he made his first five starts of the year at AAA Reno. Webster came to the Diamondbacks in the offseason trade that sent Wade Miley to Boston, but he pitched to an unimpressive 9.00 ERA with a 4.7 BB/9 ratio. Arizona will hope he can pitch more like he did with AAA Pawtucket last year, where he had a much more respectable 3.10 ERA with lower walk totals and a significantly lower WHIP (1.24 vs. 1.96 this season) in 122 innings.
