Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the San Francisco Giants are discussing a deal for second baseman Chase Utley with the Philadelphia Phillies. Per Morosi, trade talks are deep enough to the point where prospect names have been discussed.

Current Giants second baseman Joe Panik is currently on the shelf with a back injury, and isn’t expected to be back when he’s eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday. While Panik would likely reclaim his starting role when he returns regardless, Utley would still provide the Giants with a viable replacement in the meantime.

Utley has a no-trade clause in his contract, though he said earlier this week that he’d be “more than happy to listen” if the Phillies came to him with a potential trade. The 36-year-old is in his 16th season in a Philadelphia uniform, though injuries and a .196 batting average have seen the franchise cornerstone lose his job to Cesar Hernandez. And with newly-acquired Tyler Pastornicky in the fold, Utley’s services are no longer needed.

If he were to be traded from the Phillies, Utley would join a list of traded veterans that already includes the likes of Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon and Ben Revere. The deal would also leave Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz as the only remaining members of the 2008 World Series team still on the roster, though Philadelphia has long been known to be shopping Howard.
