The Atlanta Braves announced on Friday that they’ve signed pitcher Edwin Jackson to a major league contract. Jackson had been on the free agent market since being let go by the Cubs in late July.
The 31-year-old will slot right into the Braves’ bullpen, a role in which he had some success with Chicago earlier this season. Jackson pitched to a 3.19 ERA primarily as a long reliever, pitching 31.0 innings across 23 appearances. He’s still owed roughly $15-million from the Cubs through 2016.
Jackson joins Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn and, less recently, Ross Detwiler as midseason acquisitions the Braves hope can bounce back with changes of scenery. The terms of Jackson’s contract remain unclear, so it remains to be seen whether he’ll be a free agent after the season or remain with Atlanta through 2016. If Jackson were to hit the open market, he’ll likely garner some interest if he can continue posting similar numbers with the Braves that he did with the Cubs. But whether he has/gets a contract for 2016 or not, Jackson will still be sitting pretty collecting $13-million from Chicago.
