Corey Seager Unseats Byron Buxton as Baseball’s Top Prospect

MLB has a new top prospect heading into the 2016 season and it’s Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager. He jumped ahead of Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, who was previously ranked No. 1 and is now ranked No. 2.

More from Los Angeles Dodgers

Buxton was supposed to get a serious taste of the major leagues last season, but injuries cost him most of the year. That has become a concern lately as he’s had injury troubles throughout his time in the minor leagues.

Seager got the top ranking for a variety of reasons. The multi-talented, young star can hit for power, average and gets on base consistently. In 125 games between Double-A and Triple a year ago, he hit .293 with 18 home runs and 76 RBI.

The shortstop likely won’t provide phenomenal defense, but he will get the job done. On a team with so many aging starters, having someone like Seager spark the team should be good for the Dodgers.

He figures to start the season with the big league team as he’s already gotten his first taste of big-league action. Seager appeared in 27 games with L.A. last year and hit .337 in just under 100 at bats.

The superstar potential is definitely there with Seager. Any time someone can hit for power and average, they’re going to be dangerous. He has yet to prove he can do that consistently on the major league level, but he’s going to get a chance to show he will be consistent this season.

If MLB.com is right, he will have no problem getting acclimated and beginning his domination on National League pitching.
