New York Yankees Roger Clemens Makes History

A pitcher winning his 300th game is a monumental occasion. Reaching 4000 strikeouts is even rarer, and worthy of attention. Doing both in the same game? Well, that would make you Roger Clemens, who accomplished both feats for the New York Yankees on this day in 2003.

Roger Clemens has become quite the controversial figure after his playing days. Embroiled in a PED controversy, sued for perjury, and engaged in some questionable personal behaviour, Clemens has not exactly covered himself in glory since his playing days ended.

Yet, when he was on the mound, Clemens was one of the best pitchers in the history of the game. His seven Cy Young awards, won for four different teams, are a record. He won 354 games, struck out 4672 batters, and established himself as one of the true greats. Unfortunately, his later controversies and PED allegations tarnished his career.

One of the more celebrated pitchers of his time, Clemens had one of the greatest days ever seen in terms of making history. On this day in 2003, Clemens and the New York Yankees faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals. Closing in on 300 wins and 4000 strikeouts, he picked both milestones up on this day. He struck out Edgar Rentaria to reach the 4000 strikeout mark, and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out ten in 6.2 innings for the victory.

It was certainly quite the impressive day. Clemens became the only pitcher to reach both milestones on the same day, and the third pitcher to hit the 4000 strikeout mark, joining Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan in that prestigious club. It was a performance that certainly resonates in baseball history.

Unfortunately, the good will that Roger Clemens built up during his career has long since disappeared. However, on this day in 2003, the New York Yankees starter added another page to his impressive career.
