Giancarlo Stanton will be placed on the DL with a groin injury after suffering an injury in Saturday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

It turned out to be the final play of the game and it could end up being a very costly one for the Miami Marlins. Giancarlo Stanton hit a fly ball to right field and after Adam Eaton misplayed the ball, Stanton tried for two. Eaton collected the ball and threw out Stanton, who was in obvious pain after his slide into second, for the final out to secure a 8-7 White Sox victory.

Stanton had to be helped off the field, and after the game, manager Don Mattingly addressed the media.

"“If you’ve seen that replay, it looked like he kind of pulled something. He felt something in his groin area. They’re looking at him now. We’ll see what happens with that.”"

Mattingly turned out to be right. Stanton tweaked his groin and ESPN’s Buster Olney is now reporting that Stanton will be placed on the 15-day DL. Stanton had a big night for the Marlins before suffering the injury. He hit his 25th home run of the season and collected three RBI in the loss.

The loss of a close game is hard enough to swallow but the loss of your star player in a close game is even more upsetting; especially when you’re a team in the mix for a wild card spot like the Marlins.

After a slow start to his season, Stanton is currently batting .244/.329/.496 (117 wRC+) with those 25 home runs and 70 RBI. He more than likely will be replaced by the newest member of the 3,000 hit club, Ichiro Suzuki, who will have to be the every day right fielder until Stanton recovers.

The Miami Marlins are probably hoping that Stanton is only out for those 15 days and that this injury won’t turn into something worse.
