What is better than a free pizza? Getting 51 free pizzas. Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto did just that for Ichiro Suzuki in an exchange of delicious gifts.

It all began on Monday when the Miami Marlins came to town to face off against the Cincinnati Reds. Someone gifted Reds first baseman Joey Votto quite a few donuts prior to the game that day. Later, during game action, there was an exchange between Votto and Ichiro Suzuki, where the newest member of the 3000 hit club was laughing hysterically.

Well, Votto repaid the gesture. On Thursday, Votto had 51 pizzas delivered to Ichiro’s locker, where they were stacked up and waiting for the legendary outfielder. There is no telling how many of those pizzas Ichiro and his teammates ate, nor was it reported as to what topics Votto chose to pay back his generosity.

With the stories of domestic violence that have occurred both in baseball, and in other sports, as well as the general state of the world today, little moments like this can help distract from the issues in the rest of the world. here, we just have two of the better players of their time, having some fun at the other’s expense. And getting a tasty treat while they’re at it.

It shows just how much the game has changed over the years. The level of hatred for the opposition is not there any longer, even amongst players who were never teammates. That mutual respect, where a living legend like Ichiro can be on good enough terms with Votto to send such a delivery, is refreshing to see. Maybe it is not like how things were in the olden days, but that is perfectly acceptable.
