David Ortiz’s final season is winding down and the Boston Red Sox slugger recently mentioned that he regrets announcing his retirement.  Though not in the way that many Red Sox fans have hoped that it would.

Many fans were hopeful the great season that Ortiz is having would change the big slugger’s mind about retirement. For now there is no such luck as Ortiz is set on his retirement plans. The slugger did admit however that he regretted his decision to announce his retirement before the season began due to the wear that all the media time and ceremonies were having on him.

While this may seem a bit ungrateful it is also understandable. David Ortiz is a forty-year-old player who has been subject to the gruel of baseball for a very long time. Taking that into account it is not hard to imagine that the amount of social obligations and media requests at the end of the day would be very draining for any Major League player.

With that said, it does seem like a poor time to choose to be honest about regretting his decision to announce his retirement. Many teams, reporters, and fellow players have gone out of their way and to make time to make sure they sent Ortiz out the right way.

He is being paid millions to play the game of baseball and deal with the media it seems as if he could finish out the last few weeks of the season without letting the wear the media is having on him show.

Regardless of your opinion of David Ortiz or his recent statement there is no denying the amazing final season he is having and the caliber of hitter he has been in Boston. He has brought a presence and leadership (along with some World Series rings) that will be missed in Boston next season.

The focus for now however, is solely this postseason, as Boston is headed into the playoffs with a lineup that can only be rivaled by the World Series favorite Chicago Cubs.
