The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have released right handed reliever Justin Speier. Speier signed a minor league deal with the Rockies in January in hopes of making the team as a reliever. The release came to Speier’s request as it became clear that he would not be making the Rockie’s bullpen.
Last year, in 41 games withe Angels as a reliever, Speier posted a 5.18 ERA while striking out 39 and walking 15. The last time Speier had any type of success in the majors was in 2007 , when he appeared in 51 games for the Angels and had an ERA of 2.88.
Speier,36, Will consider retiring if he can’t find a spot on a big league team. However, the Rockies are willing to bring Speier back and have him start the year in AAA. But, with many teams looking for relief help, Speier may have an easy time finding a spot on a major league team.
