Recapping the Flurry of Roster Moves before Opening Day

With Opening Day being yesterday, all 30 MLB teams had to have their 25 man roster set before the first pitch of the first game. And here is the full list of National League moves that transpired over the past few days.

The Florida Marlins designated Jai Miller, and Cristhian Martinez for assignment on Saturday. The Marlins now have 10 days to either release or trade the pair, if they fail to do so the two would then be out-righted to triple A. Miller, was in the minors for 2009 where he hit .288/.358/.512  while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 52 runners. Martinez, on the otherhand, appeared in 15 games for the Marlins last year posting a 5.13 ERA. Meanwhile in triple A, Marinez had a record of 9-3 while posting a 2.94 ERA.

The San Diego Padres designated Chad Huffman for assignment on Sunday.Huffman, who has yet to make his major league debut, hit .269/.361/.469 in 135 games for the Padres triple A affiliate last year.

The New York Mets designated Shawn Bowman for assignment. Bowman, another career minor leaguer, hit .294/.346/.458 for the Mets double A affiliate last season.

One of the more notable players designated for assignment was Aaron Miles, who was designated by the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Miles, was acquired by the Reds from the Athletics in exchange for Willy Taveras. It was the second time Miles had been dealt in the offseason, as he previously was traded from the Chicago Cubs to Oakland in part of the Jake Fox trade.  Miles, who battled with personal issues as well as injuries last year with the Cubs, hit .185/.224/.242 in 170 at bats with the Cubs last year.  [4/14 Update] Aaron Miles cleared waivers and was released.

Along with Miles, the Reds also designated Wladimir Balentien for assignment. Balentien, once a promising prospect in the mariners organization, was claimed off waivers by the Red late last season. In 96 games with the Mariners and Reds Last year, Balentien hit .234/.305/.385 while hitting 7 home runs and driving in 24 runs.  [4/14 Update] Wladimir cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville.
